ANDES SPROUTS SOCIETY - COMPETITION - ARTISTS UNITS

In 2009 Andes Sprouts Society held a competition to design a self contained unit, where artists can live
and create, for a period of few months. The design proposed by Studio A International, was shortlisted.

The unit we designed, is based on a simple bi-nuclear floor plan, with the structure made of straw bale
and wood studs. The building is designed to benefit to a maximum extent, from the sunlight and winds as
well as to integrate into nature.
A vegetated roof, that keeps cool in the hot summer time, reduce water
runoff, and support a small vegetables garden on top of the structure.
Rain water is collected and manual                     pumped into a water tank located on the roof, while the sunlight heats up the water tank.

Small scale, high efficiency wind turbines are installed on the roof. Optional, solar panels could be
used to generate the electricity, making the unit self sufficient off the grid. An efficient electrical radiant
floor heating system is proposed, as electrical energy will be available from either wind turbines or
            solar panels.

With its particular shape, the building has a powerful presence in the landscape.
